Rainier Beach Summer Day Camp 2012
2012 SUMMER DAY CAMP WEEKLY THEMES:
HIKE AND BIKE (JUNE 26-29)
We will be taking field trips on foot and break in our bike armada by taking trips to Seward Park, Kuboda Gardens, and on the Chief Sealth Trail. We’ll take time to learn about our urban and natural environments, learn bike skills, safety and maintenance, as we explore our neighborhood.
FLYING HIGH (JULY 2-6; CLOSED JULY 4)
We are going to let our imaginations SOAR as we explore the history and science of flight. We will take a trip to the Museum of Flight, build and fly gliders, hold a paper airplane competition and art plane exhibition, and make our own hot air balloons.
STORY SLAM (JULY 9-13)
We will explore good stories in all their forms: picture books, novels, storytelling, plays and even comics. We will be taking trips to library performances and hosting our own story slam on the 13th.
MATHEMAGICS (JULY 16-20)
We will be solving mysteries and riddles, playing games, playing sports, cooking feasts, making beautiful art and having so much fun we won’t even know we’re learning math.
SEATTLE TIME TRAVELERS (JULY 23-27)
Travel back in time to early Seattle. What was Rainier Beach before it was called Rainier Beach? What happened when Seattle burned? What’s underneath Seattle City Streets? We’ll be taking trips around our neighborhood and downtown to the gold rush museum and the underground tour to find out how our city grew from a logging town to a log-in town.
KIDS COLYMPICS (TWO WEEK CAMP: JULY30-AUGUST 10; CLOSED AUGUST 3)
We will be following the 2012 Summer Games by playing along. We will learn new sports and choose countries to represent. We’ll be learning about the cultures and languages of our countries and how to find them on the map. We’ll be doing track and field at Rainier Beach, swimming at Medgar Evars pool and Federal Way Community Center, and welcoming guest instructors to teach us new sports from all over the world.
COOK AND GROW (AUGUST 13-17)
We will harvest food from our learning garden and learn delicious recipes for our garden food as well as snacks, main courses, and even deserts. We are going to learn about nutrition and how different kinds of foods help us grow. We will also learn the science of food by making science experiments we can eat. On Friday we will cook a feast to share what we’ve learned with our families.
KIDS CO. CIRCUS (AUGUST 20-24)
The Legendary Jason Quick will be returning for his 5th summer of circus arts! He has been planning all year to take our annual circus arts week to a new level. Be ready to learn circus arts like juggling, acrobatics, tight rope, clowning and more! We will put on a big performance on Friday the 20th to show off we’ve learned.
SUMMER ARTS (27-30)
Paint, sculpt, draw and create works of art. Everyone can be an artist! We will be taking a trip to the Seattle Art Museum and sculpture park for inspiration. We will learn how to use professional quality art materials including ceramic clay, pastels, water colors, and pen and ink. We will also have our big end of the summer party this week with our friends from Kids Co.’s around Seattle complete with bouncy houses and Mr. John in the dunk tank.
