
Mercer Island Summer Day Camps 2012
Kids Co. on Mercer Island offers two distinct summer day camp options designed to meet the needs of children grades K-2 and the Waffle Stomper--cool kids laying down new tracks premium summer day camp for kids in 3rd-5th grade.
2012 WAFFLE STOMPER SUMMER CAMP
(3RD-5TH GRADE) WEEKLY THEMES:
JUNKYARD WARS (JUNE 18-22)
Join us for a week of destruction, discovery, and marvels. We will explore how things work, build and test our own rockets, and create extraordinary things from ordinary everyday items. We will have The Seattle RAMS join us to show off and fly their spectacular model airplanes. The week will conclude at a local park to launch our home made rockets.
PICTURE THIS, PICTURE THAT (JUNE 25-29)
A picture speaks a thousand words and we are here to express them. Join us for a week filled with creativity and self-expression. Learn how to capture extraordinary images of everyday places. We will go on photographic safari to the Olympic Sculpture Park, Alki Beach, and other Seattle gems. Everyone will create their own photo book to show off their creativity.
SECRET AGENT (JULY 2-6; CLOSED JULY 4)
Ever want to be somebody else? During this week, you will build your own spy kit complete with disguises, codes, and everything else a secret agent needs. Our mission, should you choose to accept it will include scavenger hunts at local Seattle landmarks, code breaking and creating, and other secret missions to be handed down by the President. This mission will self-destruct in five seconds…
FOOD SCIENCE (JULY 9-13)
Did you ever wonder what would happen if you mixed asparagus with ice cream? Join us to explore a week of combining science with food. We will take a trip to Pikes Place Market for supplies to create our own recipes, making tantalizing treats, and a special guest will help us create culinary concoctions. We will end the week cooking for special guests to sample our creations.
MOVIE MAGIC (TWO WEEK CAMP: JULY 16-27)
Does your child dream of becoming a star? Now is their chance to shine with two weeks of intense fun with Kids Co. Movie Magic! We will be creating a movie from start to finish. Learn how to write a script, create special effects, and put it all together. We will take a tour of a movie house, and see a motion picture to see how it all works. Our two week adventure will conclude with a red carpet premier for families and friends.
GAME ON (JULY 30-AUGUST 2; CLOSED AUGUST 3)
Time to get your game face on with a week of gaming adventures. We will visit Microsoft and see what great games they are creating, play wacky versions of our favorite games, test our nerves with Fear Factor, and head out to Game Works for some gaming action! We will also design our own game and teach others how to play. The week will end with a game-a-thon, putting center against center.
MASTER OF THE ARTS (AUGUST 6-10)
Painting, sculpture, and mixed media, oh my! We will be exploring local art museums to gain inspiration from past and present artists as a way to spark our imagination. See what it feels like to paint upside down like Michelangelo, to sculpt like Rodin, and be abstract like Picasso. The week will end with an exhibit of our work to show our family and friend the results of our creative expression.
GETTING HERE, GETTING THERE (AUGUST 13-17)
A week dedicated to planes, trains, automobiles, and all modes of transportation. See how transportation is more than just getting from here to there. We will take a tour of Sound Transit, head to the Museum of Flight to see flying marvels, and build vehicles out of vegetables. The fire department will come with their ladder truck for our Mars Rover egg drop. Who knows, we may invent the vehicle of the future.
EXPLORE SEATTLE (AUGUST 20-24)
We will be exploring the things that make Seattle unique! Discover places in Seattle you never know existed as well as rediscover places we see every day. We will flying kites at Gas Works Park, a scavenger hunt at the Seattle Waterfront, taking the Underground Tour, and making a contribution to the gum wall. Get your maps and cameras ready to become a tourist in your home town.

2012 "VOYAGE TO THE CENTER OF SUMMER" CAMP
(K-2ND GRADE) WEEKLY THEMES:
SEATTLE HERE WE COME! (JUNE 18-22)
We will test our knowledge of the city while exploring hidden landmarks. From historic Pioneer Square to getting to Ride-the-Ducks to the venturing to the top of the Space Needle, just how well do you know Seattle? Join us for a week of fun as we travel around Seattle.
PIRATES PLUNDER (JUNE 25-29)
Aargh, we are all pirates! Ere’ ye matey, ready to discover buried treasure? Be prepared to set out on a seafaring adventure! This week we will head out on a voyage to the Seattle Aquarium to discover the many creatures of the sea. We will then learn how to make boats at Center for Wooden boats and design what we would like our own boat to look like. We will then ship shore for the Odyssey Maritime Discovery Center to learn all about fishing and how to ship our treasures far and wide.
AROUND THE WORLD (JULY 2-6; CLOSED JULY 4)
Geography, world music and dance on Mercer Island? You bet! We will explore different cultures, crafts and cuisine during this week of world travel! We will see what living in different countries is like at the Children’s Museum and then set sail to Tillicum Village to learn about Washington’s Native American History. Finally, we finish our week by cooking and tasting different foods from around the world.
CREATION STATION (JULY 9-13)
This week is full of exploring our own creative talents, while being inspired by others. During the week we will get to experiment with different textiles, paints, and materials to create our own masterpieces. We will journey to the Olympic Sculpture Park to look at how the outdoors and art combine in an urban setting. Later in the week we will head to Carkeek Park and let nature inspire our next piece of work. So put on your creative caps and join us for a week of creation and self-expression!
THINK LOCAL (JULY 16-20)
Get it here! Get it fresh! This week we venture to Pike Place Market in order to learn more about what local means as it relates to the foods and other goods grown and produced right here in Washington State. We will visit the 100 year old Volunteer Park Conservatory to find out about the history of the Conservatory in Seattle. We will take a ride over the water to the Mercer Slough to pick blueberries for muffins which we will bake. Our week will culminate with a visit to a nearby farmers market where we will chat with local artisans and learn about the great finds that are available in our neighborhood.
GO FOR THE GOLD (JULY 23-27)
Go for the Gold! This week is all about sports, games, and special events from around the world. We will learn to challenge ourselves, work as a team, and even create new ways to play! Come join us for a week of fun, team work, and exercise. We will test our acrobatic skills at Sky High, head to Alki Beach for some beach-volleyball, and much more!
RIDE AND EXPLORE (JULY 30-AUGUST 2; CLOSED AUGUST 3)
Wheels and Heels Week! We will put our feet to the test this week as we journey near and far by foot, bike, and mass transit. Bring your walking shoes as we explore the different sides of Green Lake. Then we are off to explore local Mercer Island trails. Join us as we put our wheels and heels to the test!
BUILD IT, CREATE IT (AUGUST 6-10)
Are you ready to build and create new marvels with Kids Co.? This week we learn about buildings, sculptures, and amazing inventions. We will put our minds and our creativity to work as we create, design, and explore, using only the materials we gather. Our week will include a day touring the Ancient Egypt exhibit at the Pacific Science Center where we will marvel at the engineering of the ancient Egyptians. We will also take a trip scour the shelves of the Reuse Store for inspiration and cool gizmos.
SURVIVOR WEEK (AUGUST 13-17)
Can you survive? Well, with us you will. This is a week filled with outdoor skills training, learning about amazing wild animals, and exploring back to nature basics. We will journey to Woodland Park Zoo to investigate the natural habitats of animals, travel to Magnuson Park to practice survivor skills, and journey through the woods of Lincoln Park to the Puget Sound where we will take a dip in the salt-water…swimming pool, that is!
BACK TO THE FUTURE (AUGUST 20-24)
Take a ride on the Kids Co. time machine! We will travel back through time and explore the past while visiting Gold Rush Park. We will then zoom ahead to the present, discovering current cultures at the Burke Museum. From there, we will make our way to an exciting future through a visit to the IMAX Theater. We will have a blast in the past, enjoy the present, and look forward to the future!
